Properties and Applications of Zirconium Rod

Leave a message

Zirconium rod is alloyed tubular materials made from metallic tungsten and other metals. Due to the excellent nuclear properties and corrosion resistance of zirconium, zirconium rod is often used in nuclear fuel components of water-cooled reactors and in-heap structures, and is important nuclear materials. Zirconium rod is mainly used in the manufacture of chemical equipment.

Zirconium rod is a silver-white plated metal with an easily formed oxide film on the surface, glossy, similar in appearance to steel, and corrosive. High temperature and non-metallic elements and many metal elements can be generated solid solution compounds, zirconium rod plasticity is good, easy to process into plates, can be drawn into zirconium wire, but also can be made into targets and so on. The corrosion resistance of zirconium is better than titanium, close to niobium and tantalum.

Zirconium has a wide range of applications, mainly in the form of zirconium silicate and zirconium oxide, which are used in ceramics and refractory materials. This part of the application accounts for more than 90% of zirconium consumption. In addition, zirconium has excellent nuclear properties and therefore has a small thermal neutron absorption cross section of 0.1810-28. One of the important uses of zirconium and its alloys is as fuel cap material for atomic energy reactors and other structural materials. Therefore, the research and development of zirconium and zirconium alloy is closely related to the development of the nuclear power industry, initially used in nuclear-powered ships, and later actively developing nuclear power plants.

Zirconium rod is reactive metals with a high affinity for oxygen, so a protective oxide film is formed in room temperature air, and this oxide film gives tungsten and its alloys excellent corrosion resistance. Corrosion-resistant tungsten is highly resistant to many tin-type media, has mechanical and heat transfer properties, as well as considerable cost advantages, and has become an excellent corrosion-resistant structural material in today's petrochemical field.

Industrial zirconium rod is widely used in pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pipelines, tanks, shafts, mixers and other mechanical equipment, valves, pumps, sprays, trays, weapons making, tower linings and many other corrosion resistant process equipment. According to statistics, processing in the form of zirconium (or sponge zirconium), and then processed into zirconium alloys, suitable for nuclear fuel parts or industrial areas. In terms of the level of processing difficulty, science and technology, the metal-made industry chain is at a relatively good level.
